Stretching workshop March 24th
Posted on: 22/02/2012 08:15 PM
Jo McRae our local posture, nutrition and conditioning coach is running a stretching workshop on March 24th from 4pm-6pm at the Nuffield gym on Hayes Lane. Several of us have been to her sessions and they are very useful if you're doing a big sportif, racing or just want to stay more felxible. It's 40 and currently exclusively for Bigfoot members if there's a minimum of 6 or 7. Jo's website is www.trainingforcyclists.co.uk
. Please post here or contact Jo if you're interested.

Ouch! - Stretching workshop March 24th
Posted on: 01/03/2012 12:32 PM
Bumping this up.

I'd really encourage riders doing longer events or riding regularly (eg. commuting) to take this workshop and do some regular stretching and ideally do some core strength building exercises as well (like the midweek circuit training). Too much riding without any cross-training can result in postural imbalances particularly if you have a desk-bound job. I suspect that the risks are greater during the colder months as muscles are naturally more contracted to start with.

I'm writing as someone who is currently unable to put on his own socks having slipped a disc on my commute on Monday. My own fault as I haven't been paying enough attention to my own advice above. Believe me I will be in future.

Hey Dominic, sorry to hear of your injury. I hope you are up and back on your bike soon.

Martin.

PS. I don't do much cross-training, Yoga once-a-week and Circuit Training once-a-week, but I think it makes a difference.....

Hello all, Thought it was about time to get in touch direct as the 'stretching for cyclists' workshop is two weeks away now. I developed this workshop as a good value 'shortcut' to many of the key stretches I include in cyclists training programs. Because of the repetitive nature of the sport, and the forward bend of our 'cycling posture' there are some key areas that almost all cyclists should be stretching to counter problems that can arise.

This stretch workshop will help you if:
Your back or neck aches on or off the bike
You struggle to get comfortable on your bike inspite of 'bike fits'
You want to maximise your recovery between training sessions
You are keen to stay healthy and injury free (so that you can keep riding!)

I know alot of people don't have much time, so sometimes it is important that you are using any spare moments to be doing the 'right' things to help your cycling. Don't wait until you have a back problem that stops you riding your bike! The stretches you will learn in this workshop can keep you in great shape without too much of an investment in time or money.

Feel free to get in touch with any questions as I am now on the forum. I will do my best to respond here over the next 10 days or so....

Hugh Webb and I attended Jo stretching sessions about year ago and I can highly recommend it to anyone with back or even hamstring issues.

Jo will demonstrate a series of exercise which will help with flexibility and strengthening core muscles.

Hi Jo,
I'd love to do this as I do suffer with my back.
I'd also like to try your Pilate Classes. I see you do one on a Monday evening at Biggin Hill so will give that a go next Monday.
I have your number, from Garry, so will ring you soon.

Re: Stretching workshop May 5th
Posted on: 04/04/2012 03:46 PM
Jo McRae has kindly offered to try and arrange another date for the stretch session as the first date was not good for a few people and we did not have enough bodies to fill the class.
Interested so far are

Rachael (me)
Lisa K
Angela M

The date is now 5th May. This is the day before the Hayes to Brighton. Couldn't be a better time to have a good 2hr stretch session before a long ride.

If your interested please post here.
Now the only thing I don't have at the moment is a time on Sat May 5th but as soon as I have spoken to Jo I'll post or Jo may even post herself and let you all know.

Hi Rachel, All,

Having just visited Denver for a bike fit it became pretty obvious that various parts of my body could do with some serious stretching out so I would be very interested to join you all for this session with Jo.

Hello all,

Glad this thread has picked up with some new interest :) Thanks Rachel for all your work in rallying the troops.

Could those interested please drop me a quick line on jo@jomcrae.co.uk with your name, and anything you feel I should know in brief. - Any problem areas, questions you might have etc. Then I can be fully prepared with the numbers and may be able to tailor the workshop to answer your specific queries.

Thanks,
Jo
