Mike was involved in a collision with a car at Sundridge. He's got two small fractures to his wrist and we wish him a speedy recovery.
Thanks to John Michaelis and others who were there to help out - and the shopkeeper who looked after his bike. For possible insurance purposes we need to know who was behind Mike and saw the incident. John thinks Craig and Stevie may be witnesses. Please contact me asap if you saw anything: 07793 373286 or emailandy@bigfootbikeclub.org

To everyone who has made contact with their good wishes may I say a big thank you. I have been to the Princess Royal this afternoon for a progress report on my injuries. I have a broken scaphoid bone in the right hand along with damage to one of the metacarpels (?). I have also got deep tissue damage to my left shoulder and left thumb (hence the reason I am typing slowly!!).
The broken scaphoid means that I will be in plaster for at least 8 weeks which is going to have a serious impact on my Marmotte training. However I am still hopeful that I can participate in that and join you on the trip to Italy.

From all level 3 Bigfoot riders, we wish you a quick recovery. On the Saturday morning rides, you have gone out of your way to help, often forfeiting your own ride to accompany others home. I remember on the last day of the B2B when you were in severe back pain from loading the truck by yourself with the kit of 23 cyclists. You still rode 135km into Barcelona that day and at the end couldn't even lift your own bike or bag. Next day, you had to drive a truck from Barcelona to London and managed to cross the Channel without a passport! You're intrepid. 8 weeks out means the doctor says you will be back on 28th March. Bet you beat that date though. We all hope to have your good-natured company before then.

Hi all:-)
Visited PR Hospital again on Wednesday.Left wrist severely slapped by Doctor for going to work, using PC and not keeping my right hand elevated. New cast fitted, just as much an impediment as the previous one! Next visit on April 1st (how appropriate) to have the wrist x-rayed again. Doesn't look too hopeful for Italy as I will have been out of the saddle for 8 weeks by then, assuming that the cast is removed and not replaced:-(.
As I should be able to claim my outlay for the Italy Trip from the 3rd party insurer if anyone wants a very cheap trip (i.e nearly all paid for) to Italy for one week, please let me know!!

Just to let you know that the third party's insurers have admitted full liability for the accident. A big thank you to Stuart and Craig for responding so quickly to the insurer's requests for information.
I had my first physio appointment yesterday. Too early to do anything for the right hand so concentrated on the left hand and shoulder. Physio has diagnosed muscle damage in the left shoulder and has given me some gentle exercises to get on with. Will have to wait til cast is removed before she can increase the intensity.
Got my bike back on Saturday after the guys at Bigfoot had given it the all clear. Gutted that there was no damage other than a buckled front wheel as I was looking forward to a new bike!!

Thanks for the update. Here's hoping the physio speeds your recovery.
If anyone reading this has been on more than 3 rides with Bigfoot and has yet to join the Club, please do so because it means you can call on assistance from CTC in cases like this and also the Club has your contact details.

A further update. Been back to Princess Royal today as I was concerned that my hand was still swollen some five weeks after the accident. They took the cast off, gave me 4 X-Rays and told me I need to be more patient! So my next appointment has been changed to April 15th. That means Italy is definitely out of the question.
In the meantime the physio has started me on a course of acupuncture for the impingement injury to my left shoulder. Quite a revelation having so many needles stuck in various parts of the body! (No quips about tiny pricks, please!!)

Did anyone else see the article in the news on Saturday about the cyclist who was given a 12 month conditional discharge by Oxford Magistrates for knocking a 13 year old boy over at a pedestrian crossing? Although the boy was uninjured, the cyclist stopped and stayed with him until his father arrived to take him home.
Somewhat contrasts with the attitude of Kent Police following my accident. Despite (1) my sustaining a broken wrist and damage to my left shoulder (2) there being five witnesses and (3) the third party insurer accepting full liability, Kent Police have decided to take no action against the driver of the car.
One law for cyclists and one law for motorists?

After 10 very frustrating weeks the plaster cast was finally removed yesterday. Feeling very vulnerable without it!
Now, to quote the consultant, it's down to some very aggressive physiotherapy, to get all the mobility back into the hand and fingers.

An up date on my rehabilitation! Had an MRI scan on my left shoulder as it was still causing me pain some twelve weeks after the accident. Results show that I have a torn supraspinatus tendon. Unfortunately, as the hospital did not pick up on this earlier, it has retracted 2cm. This means that that they cannot now perform keyhole surgery and they will have to perform an invasive repair. They hope to schedule the operation within 4 weeks. Thereafter I will be in a sling for 6 weeks followed by another 6 weeks of physio on the left arm and shoulder.
So it's goodbye to cycling for 2009 then.

Just been advised by the hospital that the date for my operation has been set for July 7th.
On a separate note, I complained to the IPCC about the way the accident was handled by Kent Police in particular the officer who attended the scene who, in his accident report, stated that he interviewed me and has me as saying that I misjudged my speed. A total fabrication and lie as I have never spoken with him!
The IPCC passed my complaint on to Kent Police Professional Standards Department who have contacted me and I am meeting them next Thursday.

Date of my operation was pulled forward to yesterday, June 23rd, due to a cancellation.
The consultant told me afterwards that the operation had been very successful. I guess the success must be inversely proportional to the pain I am now suffering! The hospital has fitted me with a sling that keeps my upper left arm tight against my body. I have to wear this 24/7 for the next 4 weeks which, if nothing else, makes sleeping a challenge!
The IPCC has taken up my complaint about the way the accident was handled by Kent Police and have already been in contact with me and John M. If they have not done so already they will also be making contact with Simon and Craig. The IPCC's initial view is that the officer who attended the scene has fabricated evidence.

Hi Mike, sounds like you're having a pretty rough time at the moment but I hope you get everything sorted out. Your bike is safe and well and I'm still trying to get the ride to work details from work so that I can actually buy my own! Don't hesitate to recall your bike for any reason. Take care and I hope that the op goes well.

I have today received a letter from Kent Police Professional Standards division in which they advise that my complaint, regarding the conduct of the officer who attended the scene of the accident, has been upheld. The officer will now be required to attend a Misconduct Hearing in the near future. It is probable that John M Craig C and Simon J will be asked to attend as witnesses. My thanks to all of them for their support.
Physiotherapy on my left shoulder has been completed. I have about 90% mobility in that arm albeit with little strength. I am doing arm strengthening exercises at the gym three times a week. I am also receiving specialist therapy on my right hand in an attempt to improve the 75% mobility I have there.
I was looking at getting a turbo trainer in order to regain my leg strength and stamina etc. The article that was posted on the website this week was very apposite. Thank you to whoever published it!!

An update on the disciplinary hearing that the officer was required to attend for gross misconduct.
The officer was going to defend the charge. However, I heard today from Kent Police that, following advice from the Police Federation, he has just resigned.
Shame, as I would like to have met him. Despite stating in his accident report that he had interviewed me at the scene of the accident I have never had the pleasure!
John, Craig and Simon your services as witnesses will not be required but thanks for all your support.

The whole saga sounds like a complete nightmare; for it to drag on this long and for you to have to deal with the false Police report, hopefully that's the end of it?
Having done the Marmotte myself I wish you the best of luck if you choose to take it on this year. It's 'painful' but not 'invasive operation on your shoulder painful'!
