February 2010 Newsletter

From Spencer

I hope you are all having a great half term. There a lots of exciting things happening in the world of Go Ride as usual.
Thanks to all who took the time to ride ‘Keston Ponds’ with us an exciting experience and a lesson in how we need to share our precious resources.
Please remember that there is no pressure on anyone to involve themselves in any of the racing activities below, they are purely on offer should you wish to participate. ‘The Bigfoot Way’

Here's a quick summary of a few things you should all be aware of:

Club Development Workshop

Apologies about the delay in sending these out, but attached are the slides from last week’s meeting. Thanks to everyone who came – we were really encouraged by the turn out, and hopefully everyone (including the BC coaches present) took something away from it.

We will be planning another in the future and will let you all know nearer the time.

Go-Ride Racing March

Also attached are the Go-Ride Racing application form and the flyer for the Herne Hill Track Racing series.

For those who missed it, Go Ride Racing is an introductory level of racing aimed at youths who have either never raced before, or have very little racing experience.

The first Go Ride Racing events are the Herne Hill track series on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of March.

Go-Ride MTB Competition

This will be on Saturday Morning 20th of March at the Priory School Orpington. This will be instead of our usual session. Penge CC, Darrick Wood Wheelers and Priory Go-Ride will be in attendance.

Go-Ride Racing April

There will also be Go-Ride Circuit racing at Crystal Palace commencing on Tuesday evening the 20th April. This will like the track racing have special emphasis on those who have never ridden a circuit before.

Go-Ride Conferences

I’ve seen that a few of the clubs on this list have already signed up to attend our nearest Go-Ride conference in Watford on the 7th of March. There is much more information on the link below, but basically this one day conference is a great chance to pick up some new skills and advice from some of British Cycling’s expert coaches as well as sharing ideas with other Go-Ride club coaches. There’s also free equipment and food, and some celebrity cyclists to rub shoulders with!

Look forward to seeing you all back at Pickhurst on Saturday 27th February

Herne Hill Herne Hill Trip

Thanks to a wonderful break in the weather the Big Foot Go Ride club met up with Penge CC Go Ride to enjoy the blue skies, brown mud and puddles at Hernes Hill Velodrome's own mountain bike course. About 20 Go Riders plus a few brave adults rode the maze of tracks, including some steep slopes up and down - so it will come as no surprise that the focus of the session was on braking skills! One highlight of the session was to meet one of British Cycling's National Team who managed not only to go down a ridiculously steep 20m decent - but then went on to ride up it too! Thanks to Spencer and Jonathan (from Penge CC) for arranging the afternoon.

Bigfoot winners
Trophy winnersBigfoot Go Ride Club wins first Bromley Bike Blast!
Well done to Ellica McGregor, Aaron McIntyre, Alexander Robertson, Callum McIntyre, Dhanika Kapoor, George Saunders, Emily Ogden, Stanley Brittain, Isobel Mortimer, Nakul Kapoor, Natasha Churchill, Zak Hunter-Gilbert and Olivia Duhre who last Saturday won the very first Bromley Bike Blast cup. On a thankfully dry day there was hot competition between our club and the Penge and Priory Go Ride Cycle Clubs, with the lead switching hands during the day. All our riders competed in the Mountain Bike Circuit race, on the Cycle Skills circuit and in the Track Race and finally came out on top - thanks to the individual points contributions of every rider. The final team score was a close 23 1/2 to 21 1/2 points. This will be an annual summer event, probably with more teams next year, but certainly with Penge seeking revenge!

Our Go-Ride club continues next school year - if you would be interested in helping on Saturday mornings or on special events or with a bit of admin please contact Adam by sending an email to adam@bigfootbikeclub.org.

Bigfoot Go-Ride for Juniors (ages 8-14) returns on Saturdays in Septembr 10.30am - 12 noon (registration at 10.15) at Pickhurst Junior School. Sessions are led by British Cycling trained coaches. Our Welfare Officer is Sandra Eder. She can be contacted on 07771 310743.

What is Go-Ride?
Go-Ride is British Cycling’s Club Development Programme aimed at improving both young riders and clubs. It focuses on volunteers and young members – improving coaching standards and increasing the number of young riders with access to coaching activities. Go-Ride supports the creation of school-club links, which helps provide clubs with a constant influx of new young members and helps everyone work towards our shared vision of more young people, more active, more often in cycling. The success of Go-Ride is dependent upon partnerships between British Cycling, clubs, schools, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

Clubs must already meet certain criteria before joining the programme but along the way they continually work towards improving themselves and achieving ‘best-practice’. Once all the pieces are in place, a club can become Go-Ride Clubmark Accredited.

Schools can easily set up Go-Ride School Clubs and do not need to work towards Go-Ride Clubmark Accreditation. Once a school has a qualified coach willing to offer regular coaching sessions, it is just a short step to establishing an affiliated Go-Ride School Club.

All British Cycling qualified coaches meet a lot of the criteria necessary to become Go-Ride Clubmark Accredited; they have attended a course on Safeguarding and Protecting Children, they have a valid first-aid certificate, and are checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. As such, a lot of clubs who aren’t already working towards Go-Ride Clubmark Accreditation have the necessary training to do so.

Who is it for?
Clubs Go-Ride is designed for clubs determined to improve their club activities and management. One of the benefits, alongside better administration, is that Go-Ride helps clubs increase youth membership and acts as a beacon to show that clubs provide a supportive environment for young members.

Schools Go-Ride activities can be delivered in schools. A link is established between the school and a local Go-Ride community club. This provides a sustainable exit route, allowing pupils to continue their cycling interests outside of school.

Riders Go-Ride coaching activities have been designed to introduce young people to a range of cycling disciplines, such as; BMX, Cycle Speedway, Cyclo-Cross, Mountain Biking, Road and Track Riding. So whatever your age or ability, there’ll be something to suit your needs.

Volunteers Go-Ride clubs rely on the hard work of volunteers. These volunteers include; Coaches, Club Contacts, and Club Welfare Officers. Go-Ride clubs are offered training for volunteers to help build a supportive environment for young people, in which they can enjoy their cycling.

Families Go-Ride clubs have something to offer everyone. They offer opportunities to ride, regardless of your age and ability, and opportunities to volunteer. There’s something for the whole family.
